Laser Engraving in Advertising: A Technical Overview

The advertising and signage industry has undergone a profound transformation over the past decade, driven in large part by the adoption of laser engraving technology. Laser Types: CO₂ vs. Fiber vs. UV

CO₂ Lasers

CO₂ lasers operate at a wavelength of approximately 10.6 micrometers in the far-infrared spectrum. This wavelength is strongly absorbed by organic and non-metallic materials, making CO₂ lasers the most versatile choice for processing wood, acrylic, leather, glass, paper, and many plastics.

In advertising applications, CO₂ lasers are the workhorse for acrylic fabrication—cutting crisp letters, engraving frosted effects for backlit signage, and producing detailed graphics on wood and composite materials. They also excel at removing painted or coated surfaces, which is useful for creating contrast on dual-color materials like engraving laminate.

The technology is mature, widely available, and offers relatively low operating costs, making it the entry point for many signage shops.

 

Fiber Lasers

Fiber lasers operate at a much shorter wavelength of approximately 1.06 micrometers. This wavelength is readily absorbed by metals and certain engineered plastics, making fiber lasers the preferred choice for marking and engraving on stainless steel, aluminum, brass, titanium, and other metals.

For advertising applications, fiber lasers are essential for metal signage—producing high-contrast permanent markings on aluminum nameplates, stainless steel corporate logos, and durable outdoor wayfinding signs. They can also create colorful effects on stainless steel and titanium through controlled oxidation, adding a premium aesthetic to promotional products.

Fiber lasers offer higher precision, faster processing speeds, and lower operational costs compared to CO₂ lasers for metal applications, though they come with higher initial capital expenditure.

 

UV Lasers

UV lasers operate at 355 nanometers in the ultraviolet spectrum. Their short wavelength enables “cold” processing with minimal heat-affected zones, making them ideal for marking heat-sensitive materials like certain plastics and for applications requiring extremely fine detail.

In the advertising sector, UV lasers are often used for high-precision marking on clear or transparent plastics, technical components, and premium promotional items where thermal damage cannot be tolerated.

 

Material Capabilities

One of the primary reasons laser engraving has gained such traction in advertising is its extraordinary material flexibility. A single machine can process a wide range of substrates, eliminating the need for multiple specialized tools.

Acrylic

Acrylic (PMMA) is arguably the most important material in modern signage, and lasers handle it exceptionally well. CO₂ lasers produce clean, flame-polished edges when cutting acrylic, and can create frosted, translucent effects through controlled engraving. This makes acrylic ideal for illuminated channel letters, backlit logos, and retail display elements.

Wood

Wood remains a popular choice for natural, artisanal, and eco-friendly branding. Laser engraving on wood produces warm, tactile finishes with excellent contrast, suitable for rustic signage, decorative panels, and promotional displays. The ability to create layered, three-dimensional textures through variable-depth engraving adds another dimension to wooden signage.

Metals

Aluminum, stainless steel, and brass are staples of high-end corporate signage and outdoor wayfinding. Fiber lasers produce crisp, durable markings on these materials that withstand weathering and maintain legibility over years of exposure. Metal signage engraved with lasers offers a polished, industrial aesthetic that communicates durability and professionalism.
